About
Valerie Bauman is an award-winning journalist with two decades of experience. She's passionate about telling stories that hold those in power accountable and give voice to the voiceless. One of her biggest focuses has been health care, with coverage spanning the Affordable Care Act, pharmaceutical litigation, and the opioid epidemic. Her work has explored immigration, racial and socio-economic disparities, mass incarceration, and the legalization of recreational marijuana.
An investigative reporter at Newsweek, Valerie previously worked for Bloomberg Law, Newsday, and The Associated Press – for whom she covered Hurricane Katrina from the Jackson, Miss., bureau, and later the New York State legislature as a political reporter. Valerie is proud of a series of stories she wrote about victims of sex trafficking that helped lead to a change in New York State law, ending the incarceration of youth sex-trafficking victims on prostitution charges.
In her free time, she enjoys making jewelry, gardening, and creative writing. Valerie grew up in the Tacoma/Seattle area but also spent time in North Carolina, Mississippi, and New York. She lives in Washington, D.C.
